Visakhapatnam district records highest power consumption on Earth Day, with coastal Discom meeting demand without outages.
On the eve of Earth Day, on April 21, at 9:50 p.m., the Visakhapatnam district recorded the year’s (FY 2025-26) maximum power consumption of 1,361 million units per day.
Meanwhile, Eastern Power Distribution Company of Andhra Pradesh Limited (APEPDCL) registered the year’s maximum electricity demand on the same day at 9.35 p.m., when the coastal Discom recorded 4,350 million units of power consumption by around 70 lakh consumers under its limits.
Coastal Discom covers five erstwhile coastal districts: Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, East Godavari, and West Godavari.
While Visakhapatnam district recorded its maximum power consumption of 1,361 million units at 9:50 p.m. on April 21, Srikakulam district recorded its maximum consumption of 339 million units at 12:50 p.m. on April 5.
Meanwhile, the maximum power consumption in Vizianagaram district was 467 million units, recorded at 2:32 p.m. on April 4. East Godavari’s maximum power consumption for the year was 1,083 million units, recorded at 9.51 p.m. on April 20. West Godavari recorded its maximum power consumption of 1,300 million units at 12.21 p.m. on April 5.
“High power consumption is seen in summer due to various reasons such as excess usage of home appliances like Air Conditioners, and also humid weather conditions. Usually, we register such high power consumption in the night time when the ACs are switched on,” EPDCL CMD I. Prudhvitej tells The Hindu.
“Despite high power consumption, we are able to give an uninterrupted power supply to the consumers without any power outages. It was possible with the continuous support from the higher authorities and the government,” said APEPDCL Madhurawada zone head Polaki Srinivasa Rao.
