Ajmer Dargah cleric Gauhar Chishti, who was on the run after raising objectionable slogans against Nupur Sharma, was arrested on Thursday. He will be produced in court today.
Ajmer Dargah cleric Gauhar Chisti, who was absconding after raising objectionable slogans against former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma, will be produced in court on Friday.
The police team had nabbed Chishti from Peelikhan in Hyderabad along with one Mohammed Ahsanullah, accused of giving refuge to Chishti. Both the accused were brought to Jaipur via flight.
From Jaipur, the police team took Chishti by road to Ajmer, reaching there during the wee hours of Friday.
Meanwhile, the Ajmer Superintendent of Police is scheduled to hold a press conference at 10:30 am today regarding Chishti's custody.
Chisti had been absconding after a video of him allegedly provoking people to raise the 'sar tan se juda' slogan at Ajmer Dargah premises went viral. The video, as per information, was made on June 17 and a case was registered against Chishti on June 25.
Two other clerics of the Dargah—Aadil Chisthi and Sarwar Chisthi—had also made provocative statements against Nupur Sharma.
Their statements come against the backdrop of now-suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma's remarks on Prophet Mohammad that led to widespread violent protests across the country and also drew condemnation from some Gulf countries.
