In one of the firsts, co-owner of Clean Slate OTT Filmz, Karnesh Ssharma is all set to launch a female-oriented content platform in the first quarter of 2023. Titled Clean OTT, the platform will place women-driven storylines, actors, directors, and producers on top of quality content for global audiences. Karnesh will provide a list of cut-through content placing female actors, directors and producers at its heart. The move also marks the world’s largest film export, which has a central role to play in challenging global gender stereotypes.
Karnesh Ssharma is the co-owner of Clean Slate Filmz, along with his sister, Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma. He is all set to create new benchmarks by removing boundaries for female professionals and shifting away from the ‘male gaze’ criteria for casting and scriptwriting in India. The move will also change the perception of one of the world’s largest film industries. Karnesh also recently announced a $54mn content deal with Amazon Prime and Netflix for his production company Clean Slate Filmz.
Karnesh grew up in a household where women around him were encouraged to overcome barriers. He, thus, made it his mission to use the mode of entertainment to not only entertain but to educate audiences on real-life issues, often those impacting girls and women. Karnesh has also been lauded for producing challenging content which places the female perspective centre stage with subjects such as honour killings, child marriages and domestic violence. His mission with Clean OTT is to curate meaningful storylines led by female protagonists, shifting away from the infamous ‘male gaze’ criteria.
Talking about his upcoming platform Clean OTT, Karnesh Ssharma shared, “When the voices of women are heard it teaches us new perspectives which, as an audience and filmmaker, are just as compelling and interesting. Its stereotypical when I hear people say women’s stories are just about oppression or fall into the romantic comedy genre. Female first content is in fact extremely exciting and eclectic.”
Further adding, “We believe there is a unique opportunity to expand content. For example, women make up 50% of viewership in India yet most of the content is male focused or represents women in a secondary fashion. We are confident the Clean OTT narratives will appeal to everyone as we provide a platform free of prejudice. This will give women a voice that can be enjoyed by any demographic around the world and for those who are part of our productions, a path for career progression.”
Clean OTT will be made available across web platforms, mobile apps, subscriptions and other content aggregators around the globe.
