The company has started sending notifications to users that the Zoom app will stop working on Chromebooks. Here’s everything you need to know.
Zoom and several other video calling apps received a lot of attractions during Covid-19 pandemic to easily connect with people all over the world. The service is still doing quite well, but it seems that Chromebooks will soon lose access to the Zoom app. The company has started sending notifications to users that the Zoom app will stop working on Chromebooks. Here’s everything you need to know.
According to a report by 9to5Google, several people have started receiving alerts for the service, which states that the Zoom app “will no longer be officially supported after August 2022.” So, why is Zoom app being removed from Chromebooks? Back in August 2020, Google announced that it will phase out Chrome apps as the company believes that we are heading towards the advancement of the open web and one no longer needs Chrome apps. There was a time when not all the functionalities were not available, but this isn’t the case right now. So, Google is pushing people more towards the web version.
Starting June 2022, Google said that it will shut down almost all the Chrome apps on ChromeOS, which is why Zoom is also being phased out. However, the company has extended the time and the notification indicates that this will happen in August this year.
Don’t worry, users are just losing access to the app and one will still be able to use the service using the web version. The official notification from the video calling service says that people can use the “new Zoom for Chrome PWA to join on ChromeOS,” similar to how it works on macOS. Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) basically mean that people get an app-like experience on the web version of the services.
All you need to do is type and search for ” Zoom PWA” on Google. You will get the link for it. After launching the Zoom for Chrome PWA, users can simply click on “Join Meeting” to join a meeting without signing in. If you want to sign in and start or schedule your own meeting, just click on Sign in.
