Chrome is getting a new logo after eight years, but you won’t be able to spot the difference. For this, you will have to closely inspect the old and the new logo to understand the difference. Elvin Hu, a designer for Google Chrome, has shared the image of the new logo on Twitter and even explained the thought behind making subtle changes.
"Some of you might have noticed a new icon in Chrome's Canary update today. Yes! we're refreshing Chrome's brand icons for the first time in 8 years. The new icons will start to appear across your devices soon," Hu said in a tweet.
The new logo seems to have a bigger blue circle and a neater design in comparison to the older logo. The colours of the logo are now pretty vibrant that make it look livelier. The new one doesn’t have shadows on the borders in each colour, so the three colours look flat.
“We simplified the main brand icon by removing the shadows, refining the proportions and brightening the colours, to align with Google's more modern brand expression,” Hu said.
He also asserted that when they placed certain shades of green and red next to each other, it “created an unpleasant colour vibration.” So, to fix this, the team used very subtle gradients for the new logo to make the icon “more accessible” and prevent any colour vibration.
Notably, this is not the first time Chrome has received subtle design changes. This happened in 2014 too. From a shiny, three-dimensional emblem to a 2D symbol, Google’s design team completely changed Chrome’s logo back in 2011, which was the biggest design change ever.
According to analytics firm StatCounter, Chrome has the biggest browser market share worldwide. It accounts for 63 per cent of web usage, which explains why Google might not make big design changes.
