After the DNC, the $75M budget for securing the arena highlights the largest police presence in Chicago history, surpassing resources during the 2020 George Floyd protests.
Weitzel recalled that when he was chief during the protests after the death of Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police, the department "was not given the resources that we needed from outside our own agency when we would ask for them, and certainly not anywhere near this level." "People forget that the Democrats were the party of, and probably still are the party of defund the police, and now the Democratic Party at the Democratic National Convention has the largest police presence in Chicago history. I mean, that kind of strikes me as very strange," he said.
