Chennai civic body collects Rs 1,35,590 as fine from 87 park contractors for lack of proper maintenance

The Greater Chennai Corporation has collected RS 1,35,590 as penalties from a total of 87 contractors for not maintaining public parks in good condition. This was noted during the field inspection conducted from June 4 to July 7.
The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has fined 87 parks for lack of proper maintenance. The total amount collected as fines was Rs 1,35,590. The GCC conducted a field inspection of the parks from June 14 to July 7.
In a press release, the GCC said that 738 parks are being maintained for public use by its prk department. Among these, the maintenance work of 571 parks has been issued to private contractors.
Contractors are expected to employ enough workers to ensure that maintenance and other work get completed in the allotted time period. According to the contractors’ agreement, they should also deploy a security guard, a sanitary worker and a park supervisor, among other things.
In the release, the GCC said that 18 contractors were fined Rs 28,090 for not employing enough workers, and another 69 were fined Rs 1,07,500 for bad maintenance. This was observed during the GCC’s field inspection.
Corporation Commissioner Gagandeep Singh Bedi stated that contractors were fined anywhere between Rs 500 to 10,000 for not employing enough workers. Further, if they were fined three times, their contracts would be cancelled, added Bedi.
