Through a holiday food and clothing drive, a group that helps newcomers in Sudbury was able to support 60 families in the region.
Thriving African Families partnered with Sudbury District Restorative Justice for its Culturally-Centred Christmas Food Drive.
Around 280 individuals were able to benefit from culturally meaningful holiday meals, and could get warm winter clothing if needed.
"The holidays can be particularly challenging for newcomer and low-income families," said Dokun Nochirionye, the founder and executive of Thriving African Families, in a news release.
"By addressing food insecurity with culturally relevant solutions, we're not just meeting basic needs — we're preserving traditions, promoting cultural pride, and strengthening community connections. Instead of feeling isolated and having unfamiliar meals, families can gather around comfort foods that are heartwarming and truly festive for them."
The organization said 130 families reached out for support, but it only had capacity to support 60 with the food drive. They will look at expanding the initiative.
Thriving African Families is a charitable organization in Sudbury that is dedicated to empowering families of African heritage in the community.
