Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said after the 1-0 win over Atletico de Madrid in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-final that the team needed to control their emotions and attack a bit better in the second leg at the Wanda Metropolitano on Wednesday.
Manchester City beat Atletico de Madrid 1-0 in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League semi-final. Substitute Phil Foden made the difference in the second half with a goal in the 70th minute. It was really an attack vs defence game throughout the first half, and it took over an hour for Pep Guardiola’s men to break the deadlock.
The game began as expected, with Diego Simeone's men parking the bus, playing defensively and City dominating all the possession. Atleti did try to counter the hosts’ high defensive line from time to time, but Pep Guardiola’s men were well aware.
“We have to control our emotions and do what we have to do," Guardiola told reporters after Tuesday's game. "There will be a referee there and we have to play our game.”
"(Atletico) have faced this kind of knockout stages many times and it will be a good test for us with our maturity in this game.”
"Jack reacted really well and stayed focused on what we needed to do."
Pep Guardiola pointed out that the game was different after the goal was scored, with players pressing a bit more.
"We've won the game with 1-0 and after 1-0 it was a little bit different. All the players start to press a little bit higher," Guardiola said.
