Ahead of Rahul Gandhi's appearance before the ED, the Congress hit out at the Centre for trying to intimidate and silence Opposition leaders by lodging false cases against them.
Launching a scathing attack against the BJP-led Union government, the Congress on Sunday, June 12, said an attempt was being made by the government to silence Opposition leaders protesting the government's failures.
Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Ranjeet Ranjan from Chhattisgarh said, “They (BJP) are trying to silence the Opposition. You either join the BJP and speak in their favour or face false cases. It started in West Bengal with Mukul Roy. Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi, are being intimidated with false cases.”
The Congress leader said that the party has been raising people-centric issues for the last eight years, but this only resulted in harassment by Enforcement Directorate and Income Tax officials.

"We have been exposing the government on various fronts — be it unemployment, price rise, petroleum prices, economic slowdown, hatred, Kashmiri Pandits. The government, in order to divert the public's attention is coming with new excuses every day," she said, adding that the Prophet Mohammad controversy is part of the saffron party's strategy to divert the public's attention.
"What is being shown on the television — Jammu and Kashmir is burning. People are protesting in every state. You have been compelled to tender an apology to many countries," the Congress leader said, citing the Nupur Sharma controversy.
Ranjan said that BJP was responsible for whatever was happening in the country. She said that the Congress is not opposed to the National Herald case but against the misuse of ED by the union government.
