
Centre overstepping boundaries, using police to instill fear: TMC's Mahua Moitra

Speaking at the India Today Conclave East 2022, TMC MP from West Bengal Mahua Moitra accused the Centre of breaking down the federal structure of the nation and misusing police to instil fear among people.
Lok Sabha MP from West Bengal Mahua Moitra on Tuesday, July 5, said that the Centre was overstepping its boundaries and breaking down the federal structure of the country. She also said that the Centre was using police to instil fear in people.
Moitra was speaking at the fifth edition of the India Today Conclave East that began in Kolkata on Monday, July 4.

Speaking at the session titled ‘Democratic Discourse: Power Reset: The New Structure of Indian Federalism’, Moitra said: “The Centre is overstepping its boundaries and is using the police to instil fear among people.”
She also sought to differentiate between the BJP's and the TMC's actions with regard to using the police. When asked about the arrest of a person being arrested for allegedly using unparliamentary language against CM Mamata Banerjee or the use of the police in trying to arrest Nupur Sharma, she said: "There is a strong line between criticism and inciting violence. However, if somebody is using bad language, we may not like it and as political leaders, we should let it go."

She, however, declined to comment on the police action against a YouTuber who was charged with abusing the CM of Bengal. "That's a question that the CM should answer," she said.
