Lok Sabha MP from Lakshadweep Mohammed Faizal was booked by the CBI in connection with a case relating to alleged irregularities in the export of tuna fish to Sri Lanka.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed an FIR against Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and Lok Sabha MP from Lakshadweep Mohammed Faizal in connection with a case pertaining to alleged irregularities in the export of tuna fish to Sri Lanka.
The central agency has also named Faizal’s nephew Abdul Razzak and a Sri Lanka-based company, SRT General Merchants Importer and Exporter as accused in the case.
The case came to light during a joint surprise check conducted by the CBI and vigilance officials of Lakshadweep on June 25, 2022, in the office of Lakshadweep Khadi and Village Industries Board (LKVIB) at Kavaratti Island of the Union Territory.
During the probe, the CBI found that some influential people, including Mohammed Faizal and other persons in connivance with a few others, were involved in defrauding the local fishermen and public departments.
The CBI also conducted searches on Tuesday at six premises in Delhi, Calicut and Lakshadweep linked to the MP.
According to sources, Mohammed Faizal was instrumental in facilitating the export of tuna fish to the Sri Lanka-based firm from Lakshadweep. The average international price of tuna first is Rs 400 per kg.
The fish supplied was allegedly procured from local fishermen through Lakshadweep Cooperative Marketing Federation (LCMF) and later exported to Sri Lankan firm SRT General Merchants.
