A case was registered in this regard by the CBI at the direction of the Calcutta High Court under sections 130, 124, 125, 126, 129 and 133 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Earlier, the matter was being probed by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the West Bengal government.
On March 21 of this year, a clash broke out between two groups over the murder of local TMC leader Bhadu Sheikh in Bogtui village in Birbhum's Rampurhat. It was during this clash that assailants hurled crude bombs at several houses in the village, resulting in eight people being burnt alive and one succumbing to injuries.
Bhadu Sheikh's murder is being investigated by the Birbhum district police.
