Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Anubrata Mondal's bodyguard will spend 14 more days in jail for an alleged cattle smuggling scam. He was arrested by the probe agency, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), in June.
A special court on Thursday extended the jail remand of Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Anubrata Mondal’s personal bodyguard, who was arrested in an alleged cattle smuggling scam, by 14 days.
The bodyguard, Saigal Hossain, was arrested by CBI sleuths after a prolonged interrogation in Kolkata on June 9.
Hossain, who could not provide any satisfactory explanation for the huge assets he owned, will spend 14 more days in jail as ordered by the special CBI court in Asansol.
Meanwhile, TMC leader Anubrata Mondal is currently in CBI custody following his arrest on August 12.
The Birbhum TMC president was picked up by the CBI from his Bolpur home after the central probe agency said it had found Mondal’s direct involvement in the cattle smuggling scam.
Anubrata Mondal's name came up in the cattle smuggling scam case after the CBI registered an FIR in 2020. According to the CBI, between 2015 and 2017, over 20,000 cattle heads had been seized by the Border Security Force (BSF) as they were being smuggled across the border.
The allegation against Mondal is that he used his political clout to allow safe passage to Bangladesh for consignments of cattle sourced from different parts of India and brought to the Illambazar cattle market in Birbhum.
