Capt Amarinder Singh resigns: Who are the frontrunners to be next Punjab CM

After the resignation of Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh, the decision to select the new CM has been left to the Congress high command. Former Punjab Congress chief Sunil Jakhar is being seen as the frontrunner for the top post.

After months of infighting within the Punjab Congress, Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh resigned from the top post on Saturday. According to sources, the next chief minister of Punjab is likely to be from the Navjot Singh Sidhu-led camp.

Former Punjab Congress chief Sunil Jakhar could be the first choice for the next chief minister, sources said. Jakhar's appointment as chief minister could give the Punjab Congress a combination of a Hindu Sikh chief minister and Jat Sikh president, which might favour the party ahead of the upcoming state assembly election.
