In a news release Saturday night, Cape Breton Regional Police said they have charged Ryan Joseph Pike, 36, with second degree murder and robbery. He was arrested in Reserve Mines, N.S., on Friday.
MacDonald, 34, was last seen July 7 on a surveillance camera at the Irving gas station in North Sydney, N.S.
His car was found days later in the Ormond Crescent area of Mira Road, N.S., roughly 25 kilometres away.
In November, police said they were investigating MacDonald's disappearance as a homicide - but his remains have not yet been found.
Pike's arrest is the second in the case.
On December 13, the Cape Breton police force arrested 38-year-old Mitchell McPhee of Sydney, N.S.
