Canadian officials move to block funding of protests against Covid-19 rules with sweeping new financial measures

The Canadian government is aiming to cut off financial support for protesters who are staging blockades at border crossings as it ratcheted up the pressure on the demonstrators by invoking the country's Emergencies Act.
"This is about following the money. This is about stopping the financing of these illegal blockades," Minister of Finance Chrystia Freeland said Monday while describing how the government will use the act to go after those funding the disruptive protests over Covid-19 mitigation measures.

A little-known civil rights office in the Department of Education that helps resolve complaints from students across the country about discrimination and accommodating disabilities has been gutted by the Trump administration and is now facing a ballooning backlog, a workforce that’s in flux and an unclear mandate.
