Cambridge votes to hold by-election to fill Ward 1 vacant seat
CBC
The City of Cambridge will hold a by-election to fill the vacant Ward 1 seat previously held by councillor Donna Reid.
Reid died on Aug.13 after a brief illness, according to the city. She held the seat since 2010.
Under the Ontario Municipal Act, the city declared the seat vacant on Aug.15 and had 60 days to determine how it would fill the vacancy, whether through an appointment process or through a by-election.
City council voted Tuesday night to hold a by-election.
The date for the by-election has not been set and the vote will be held through internet voting and paper ballots. The city said those votes will be counted manually.
This is the second time in four years Cambridge has had to fill a vacant seat because of the death of a councillor. In October 2019, Frank Monteiro died. He had represented Ward 7 since 2010.
