Cambridge city council has cleared the way for development of a 37-storey condo building and 28-storey hotel adjacent to the Cambridge Mill in downtown Galt.
Pearle Hospitality, which owns the Cambridge Mill, will build 253 condo units and 146 hotel suites at 130 Water St. N. The business plan also includes a restaurant and spa.
During a special council meeting Tuesday, Aaron Ciancone, president of Pearle Hospitality, said the development will boost the city's property tax revenue, and add jobs and density to the downtown core.
"A lot of us believe it's the wave of the future, where people live and work and play in the downtown," said Ciancone. "This is what this project offers."
The condo building will not include affordable units, but Ciancone agreed to kick in $2,000 a unit for affordable housing projects in the city.
The height of the proposed towers was a sticking point for some councillors, including Nicholas Ermeta.
"I don't [aspire] to be another Toronto or another London or another Niagara Falls, I want to preserve our character of this community," said Coun. Ermeta.
"I can't agree with the height — I can accept it, but I can't agree with it," said Coun. Mike Devine.
Coun. Donna Reid said she felt the change would be "very hard" but necessary.
"If we want our Galt core to revitalize itself, and to become really what it was many years ago when there were more people walking around there, then we need this kind of a building," said Coun. Reid.
Council ultimately endorsed amendments to the city's bylaws and official plan to permit the development of the towers, with councillors Ermeta, Mike Devine, Jan Liggett and Mike Mann opposing the motion, and the rest of council voting in favour.
