The government is implementing a national mission for edible oil seed, she shared, emphasizing that Indian farmers have the “capability to grow enough for our needs and more.”
She noted that “ten years ago we achieved near self-sufficiency in pulses,” adding that farmers had responded to the need by increasing the cultivated area under pulses by 50%, while the government arranged for procurement and remunerative prices. Now, she said, our consumption of pulses has increased considerably. The six year mission for pulses will see a special focus on tur, urad and masoor. Over four years, the government will procure the same from farmers registering with the indicated agencies, she shared.
