BRS condemns arrest of civil rights activist in Nagarkurnool, criticizes Congress government for undemocratic actions.
HYDERABAD
The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has condemned the arrest of civil rights activist Professor G. Haragopal at Mylaram in Nagarkurnool on Monday when he went there to express solidarity with the villagers agitating against the mining activity there.
In a statement, former minister T. Harish Rao termed the arrest as undemocratic and said it had become a routine for the Congress government in the State to arrest activists of people’s organisations even for staging a small protest. It was unfortunate that the Congress government was resorting to such tactics after making tall claims before the Assembly election stating that following democratic practices was the Congress’s seventh guarantee.
Despite claiming its rule as ‘praja palana’ (people’s rule) day-in and day-out the government was unable to withstand even small protests and arrest those participating in such events. He sought to know from the government why it was not stopping mining at Mylaram in spite of opposition from the local communities.
Another BRS leader and former minister Singireddy Niranjan Reddy too condemned the arrest of Professor Haragopal and other activists of the people’s organisations and termed it dictatorial. He appealed to the intellectuals who had been supporting the Congress blindly to shed their views and condemn such acts.
