BRS formed a committee to addresses farmers' issues in Telangana
The committee formed by the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) to address farmers’ issues in Telangana is driven solely by concern for farmers and has no political agenda, said party working president K.T. Rama Rao even as he criticised the Congress government for neglecting them.
Speaking to the media after the committee’s first meeting at former minister Niranjan Reddy’s residence on Wednesday, Mr. Rama Rao said the tragic suicide of a farmer at a bank in Adilabad had prompted its formation.
Following instructions of BRS president K. Chandrasekhar Rao, the committee will begin its work in Adilabad district on January 24. Over the next month, it will visit all districts to engage with farmers across various sectors and study key issues, including the status of loan waivers, electricity supply, farming conditions, availability of support prices, promised bonuses, and procurement centres.
He said the committee will also examine the ground-level challenges faced by farmers, analyse the causes of suicides, and submit its findings to both Mr. Chandrasekhar Rao and the State government.
Criticising the Congress party, he held the A. Revanth Reddy government responsible for farmers’ suicides in Telangana, citing its “poor decisions and unfulfilled promises”. He noted that AICC leader Rahul Gandhi had made several commitments to farmers during the ‘Farmer Declaration’ event in Warangal, including a ₹2-lakh loan waiver, ₹15,000 farmer assistance, support prices, bonuses, and extensive procurement centres, none of which had materialised.
Drawing a comparison, he praised Mr. Chandrasekhar Rao’s leadership for its empathy and proactive measures toward farmers, and highlighted initiatives such as Rythu Bandhu, Rythu Bima, 24-hour free electricity, abolition of land revenue and water taxes, Mission Kakatiya, the Palamuru-Rangareddy lift irrigation scheme, and landmark projects like Kaleshwaram and Sitarama as “unparalleled” in India’s history since Independence.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday announced that from the next financial year, a market system for organic products will be implemented in Karnataka’s Agricultural Produce Market Committees (APMC). He was speaking at the inauguration of the International Trade Fair - Organics and Millets 2025.
