The Bombay High Court on Wednesday rejected Varavara Rao’s petition to leave Mumbai and return to his hometown in Telangana.
The Bombay High Court rejected Elgar Parishad accused Varavara Rao's petition to leave Mumbai and go home to Telangana. The division bench of Justices SB Shukre and GA Sanap however, extended the time given to Rao to surrender in prison for three months.
The bench clarified that the extension of time to surrender had only been granted to enable Rao to undergo a cataract operation. Justice Shukre while granting the extension added, "And maybe try your luck and approach the higher power."
Rao had filed two petitions through Advocate R Satyanarayanan in the high court. One petition sought the court’s permission to allow him to move to Hyderabad, his home town. The second petition asked for permanent medical bail. He also filed an intervention application seeking extension of the time to surrender in prison for 6 months.

Rao was granted interim medical bail by another bench of the high court in February 2021 for a period of six months. Rao had filed for extension of the bail.
Later, Rao filed a fresh petition with more grounds. He stated that staying in Mumbai was financially draining on him and that the medical facility would be cheaper for him in Hyderabad.
Senior Advocate Anand Grover along with advocate Aditya Chitale had argued that living in Mumbai with multiple medical ailments was becoming expensive. They added that Rao was spending about Rs 96,000 per month, while the pension that he received from the State of Telangana was only Rs 50,000.
