Homicide investigators have been called in to probe a suspicious death in Sumas Mountain Regional Park outside Abbotsford, police say.
Officers were first called to a forest service road in the park around 2:45 p.m. Friday, after reports of a vehicle on fire, the Abbotsford Police Department said in a news release Saturday.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze in a red 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander, and police say they found “what are believed to be human remains” inside the burned SUV.
BC Coroners Service is working to identify the body, and the Abbotsford department is handing what it calls a “complex investigation” over to the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team.
In the meantime, Sumas Mountain Regional Park is closed to the public Saturday as police gather evidence.
Anyone who was in the Sumas Mountain area on Friday and may have seen a red 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander, or has dash camera video or other information, is asked to call IHIT at 1-877-551-4448.
