The Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has made strides in enhancing cashless travel by implementing static UPI QR codes in 75% of its bus fleet. This move is aimed at making digital payments more accessible to commuters and reducing reliance on cash transactions.
In addition, dynamic UPI QR codes are being rolled out at three major depots — Shanthinagar, Peenya, and Subashnagar. BMTC officials said that UPI transactions now contribute 20% of the corporation’s daily ticket revenue, amounting to approximately ₹60 lakh daily. “The response from commuters has been encouraging. Digital payments not only streamline the ticketing process but also ensure greater transparency,” said a senior BMTC official.
Passengers can find QR code posters on the side panels of many buses, making it easier for them to pay digitally. After completing the payment, conductors issue tickets to confirm the transaction. However, some commuters have voiced the need for further improvements.
Vinayaka K.M., a commuter from Banaswadi, appealed to the BMTC to install QR codes in all buses. “It will ease issues caused by lack of change and improve convenience for passengers and conductors. Digital payments ensure smoother, faster, and transparent travel.”
Another commuter, Prithvi Raj from Basavanagudi, emphasised the need for better implementation. “BMTC should provide UPI scanner QR code tag cards to conductors, similar to ID cards. It’s difficult to locate the QR code pasted inside crowded buses. While the QR code option is a good initiative, the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) should be encouraged for greater convenience.”
Meanwhile, the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has also embraced cashless payment systems in its bus services, starting November 2024. To facilitate this transition, KSRTC has introduced advanced Electronic Ticketing Machines (ETMs), deploying over 10,000 smart ETMs across its fleet of 8,800 buses.
Bengaluru south resident Sachin Rai remembers a time when the area around what is today Bannerghatta Road had lush green agricultural fields with ragi and groundnut crops aplenty. “I remember farmers complaining about elephants entering the fields and destroying the crops. The herds would later retreat to Bannerghatta, Anekal forest areas,” he recalled, describing it as a phenomenon that persisted till as late as the turn of the century.
