BMRCL approves proposal to increase metro fares, despite disapproval from Bengaluru Central MP P.C. Mohan. Fare hike imminent.
The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) board, at a meeting held on Friday (January 17), approved a proposal to increase metro fares.
According to BMRCL sources, the revised fare structure is likely to take effect on January 20, following the board’s endorsement of the Fare Fixation Committee’s (FFC) recommendations.
The detailed fare revision is likely to be announced soon, said officials.
The Fare Fixation Committee, an autonomous body with quasi-judicial powers, conducted a detailed review of operational costs, consulted passengers, and engaged with experts before submitting its report to BMRCL.
Bengaluru Central MP P.C. Mohan voiced his disapproval of the decision.
“I am disappointed by BMRCL’s decision to impose a 45% fare hike despite my appeal to reconsider. Hiking fares without addressing these issues force people to use private vehicles, worsening congestion. BMRCL must rethink its priorities,” he stated in a post on X.
Currently, metro fares range from ₹10 to ₹60, with smart card users getting a 5% discount.
