A section of BJP workers expects the party’s central leadership to end the suspense over who will be the next Puducherry unit president by next week.
Party functionaries have been waiting for an announcement as the observers for organisational elections have held deliberations in Puducherry on the choice of next president.
Party observer for organisational elections in Puducherry and Tamil Nadu legislator Vanathi Srinivasan was in the Union Territory in January to meet office-bearers individually. She held one-on-one meetings with Ministers, legislators, and other key functionaries.
For its organisational outreach, the BJP has divided the four regions of the UT into five segments, incorporating all the 30 Assembly constituencies. As part of the organisational elections, the party has already appointed/reappointed heads of booths (32 to 34 in each of the Assembly segments), 30 mandals (Assembly constituencies), and five districts.
“We have completed appointments of presidents of all booths, mandals, and districts early this year itself. The party’s central observers have also collected feedback from party functionaries before nominating the next president. We expect the suspense over the name of next president to be over by next week,” said a senior leader of the party.
Though several names are doing the rounds, including that of Ministers and a nominated legislator, the Central leadership was keeping its cards close as they have received inputs on Puducherry’s political situation from multiple sources, he said.
“Now, the situation is entirely different in Puducherry with several avenues for the Central leadership to get inputs about the ground situation. The party can now rely on non-political persons in the UT to gather vital information about the organisational challenges BJP confronts in Puducherry and accordingly bring people to the helm of affairs. We may even find a surprise choice for the local unit president,” the functionary of an affiliated organisation said.
