BJP leads in Majuli by-election in Assam

The Bharatiya Janata Party's candidate, Bhuban Gam, is leading in the Majuli assembly constituency by-election by more than 20,000 votes.
Ruling BJP alliance candidate Bhuban Gam is leading by more than 20,000 votes in Assam's Majuli assembly constituency by-election over his rival, Chittaranjan Basumatary, from the Assam Jatiya Parishad party, as per the ECI website.
Gam garnered 36105 votes while Basumatary got 13366 votes. The third candidate, Bhaity Richong, from the Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communits) secured 1445 votes. NOTA received 1.77% of the votes, ie 916 votes.
Polling for the by-election for the Majuli(ST) legislative assembly seat was held on March 7.
The Majuli (ST) Assembly seat fell vacant last year after Union Minister for Shipping, Ports and Ayush, Sarbananda Sonowal was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha in September last year.
Majuli is the world's largest river island and got the status of a district when Sonowal was the Chief Minister of the state. It is Assam's 35th district.
