An FIR has been registered against 75 people, including a BJP councillor, for holding a meeting at a temple in Chennai.
A case has been registered against BJP councillor Uma Anandan and 74 others for unlawful assembly after they held a meeting inside Kapaleeshwarar temple in Mylapore, Chennai.
On August 31, 75 people, including BJP Councillor Uma Anandan, Madras High Court lawyer MR Venkatesh and Ramesh Sethuraman gathered for the meeting at the temple.
The group reportedly discussed responsibility for temple maintenance and to hold officials accountable over it.
However, a complaint was filed by a temple official, Ravikumar, and based on this a case was registered under relevant sections of the IPC and CrPC.
Meanwhile, the BJP councillor has claimed that a copy of FIR was not given to him.
“No FIR copy was given to us. I came to know about FIR filed on about 70 of us through the TV channels. Is the TN Government trying to threaten and first false cases on Hindustan activists?”, tweeted Uma Anandan.
Following the meeting, there were allegations that it was about floating ‘Own Your Temple’ initiative which could create issues for Hindu Religious & Charitable Endowments Board. However, Uma Anandhan stated that no such discussions were made and that the meeting was only about devotees forging a stronger bond with the temple.
