Biden calls George Floyd's family as White House prepares for verdict in Chauvin trial

Washington — President Biden called the family of George Floyd on Monday, as the White House braces for the verdict in the trial of Derek Chauvin, the former police officer charged in Floyd's death. The jury began deliberations after the conclusion of closing arguments on Monday, and continued on Tuesday morning.
"President Biden spoke with the family of George Floyd yesterday to check in with them and also share that the family was in his prayers," White House press secretary Jen Psaki tweeted on Tuesday. Psaki said Monday that the White House is in contact with state and local authorities and encouraging protests remain peaceful. Philonise Floyd, the brother of George Floyd, said in an interview with NBC News that Mr. Biden called him earlier this week.The Food and Drug Administration said Wednesday that the U.S. food supply is still "one of the safest in the world," in the wake of a number of foodborne disease outbreaks affecting items ranging from organic carrots to deli meats to McDonald's Quarter Pounders. E. coli, listeria and other contaminants have sickened thousands of people and forced a number of recalls in recent months.
