Beyonce is removing an offensive word that has been used in the song Heated from her new album Renaissance.
Queen B aka Beyonce is removing an offensive term for disabled people from a new song from her recently-released album Renaissance. A few weeks ago, rapper Lizzo also changed the lyrics of her song to remove the same word.
Beyonce’s song Heated from the new album has the word “spaz”. The term is considered an offensive reference to the medical term spastic diplegia, which is a type of cerebral palsy.
“The word, not used intentionally in a harmful way, will be replaced,” a spokeswoman for Beyonce told The Associated Press on Monday.
The same word was removed from Lizzo’s song Grrrls in June. The rapper made the move after disability advocates complained about the lyrics on social media. After Beyonce’s new song was released, disability advocate Hannah Diviney took to Twitter again to point out the usage of the same term.
“So Beyonce used the word 'spaz' in her new song Heated. Feels like a slap in the face to me, the disabled community and the progress we tried to make with Lizzo. Guess I'll just keep telling the whole industry to 'do better' until ableist slurs disappear from music,” she wrote in a tweet.
