The West Bengal government has finally decided to hike traffic violation fines to reduce the number of road accidents as per the Motor Vehicles (MV) Act. The commuters may have to end up paying Rs 5,000 if they are caught using mobile phones while driving or if they jump a traffic light. The traffic fines in the state may increase by ten times following the amendment to the MV Act.
The Mamata Banerjee-led government had not imposed the fine then hiked by the Central government in 2019, citing the 'difficulties faced by the common man'. According to the notification, fines have been increased for a total of 26 traffic violations.

-A PTI report revealed that one has to pay a fine up to Rs 4,000 for reckless driving, which was Rs 400 earlier. The notification in this regard was issued by the state Transport department. A driver can be fined up to Rs 10,000 in case of dangerous rash driving if the person is caught committing the same crime within three years of the initial fine, the Times of India (TOI) reported.

A person has to pay a fine between Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 for violating diving rules on the road and Rs 5,000 will be fined for racing on the road.
