According to the MLA, the heat wave is specific to the southern part of Bengal. But, schools will be closed in the north as well, which calls for the demand for a separate North Bengal state.
West Bengal has advised schools to declare summer vacation from Monday till June 15 in view of the prevailing heatwave conditions in the state. However, this seemingly simple circular has stoked the call for a separate state of North Bengal.
The BJP MLA from Siliguri, Shankar Ghosh, took to Twitter to demand a separate state after the vacation notice was issued. According to the MLA, the heat wave is specific to the southern part of Bengal. But, schools will be closed in the north as well, which calls for the demand for a separate North Bengal state.
“Due 2 heat wave in South Bengal, Schools r closed in North Bengal. For such an administrative decision, the demand for a separate state is born in NB,” the MLA wrote.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee earlier recommended that all educational institutions across West Bengal take an early summer break. It is interesting to note that central and southern Bengal is witnessing massive heat waves with temperatures in Bankura and Asansol breaching 40 degrees. But, in certain areas of north Bengal, like in Uttar Dinajpur and Alipurduar, rainfall was reported.
Trinamool Congress spokesperson Kunal Ghosh slammed the BJP’s demand.
“The next time BJP heads into the polls, why don't they put the creation of a separate north Bengal state in their manifesto? Will they do that? The government's policies are all for all,” Ghosh said.
