In a letter to the Chief Electoral Officer of Bengal, the BJP alleged that Naren Chakraborty issued an open threat to dissuade BJP supporters from voting in the Asansol bypoll.
The Bengal BJP has asked the state election commission to take action against TMC MLA Naren Chakraborty for allegedly threatening saffron party leaders and workers with dire consequences.
In a letter to the Chief Electoral Officer of Bengal, the BJP alleged that Naren Chakraborty issued an open threat to voters, dissuading them from exercising their franchise in the upcoming bypolls in the Asansol Lok Sabha constituency.
Citing a video of Chakraborty shared by news agency ANI, the saffron party said the TMC legislator from Pandaveswar was heard saying that BJP supporters would be taught a lesson, and that they would have nowhere to hide if they dared to go out and vote in the elections.
“We request that such mala fide and continuous efforts to create disorder, intimidate voters must be brought to an end. The strongest action must be taken against Mr Chakraborty. We urge the Election Commission to take cognisance of the said statements and direct stringent actions against the sitting MLA,” wrote the Bengal BJP.

The party also demanded the registration of an FIR against Chakraborty as well as the MLA’s removal from Asansol till voting is over so that the bypolls may be conducted freely without any untoward incident.
BJP leader Krishnendu Mukherjee has also sought Chakraborty’s arrest, accusing him of criminal intimidation and assault on democracy. He claimed the people of the constituency were living in fear in the wake of the MLA’s threats and this hampers the conduct of free and fair elections.
