Before Jersey, what made Shahid Kapoor's Kabir Singh click. On Throwback Thursday
India Today
Shahid Kapoor's Jersey releases tomorrow, April 22. Ahead of the same, here's a flashback of the box office collection and hits and misses of Shahid's 2019 blockbuster, Kabir Singh.
The year was 2019. Shahid Kapoor and Kabir Singh had almost become one. We still remember how the crowd roared ‘Kabir Singh’ when Shahid went up to the stage to receive an award and broke into a smile. That was the smile of success. Shahid has mostly been an A-lister all his life, but certain film choices after 2009 failed to do him any justice as an artist. Udta Punjab (2016) was an exception. But Kabir Singh was something else. There were controversies and feminist approaches, but Shahid was already busy basking in the film’s success. Almost over 2 years later, Shahid will shoulder the 70 mm with Jersey. And we do have high expectations. After all, it’s his second Hindi remake.
Ahead of Shahid’s Jersey release tomorrow, April 22, let’s take a look at how his last blockbuster, Kabir Singh fared and what is it that made the film receive kudos and criticism at the same time.
Shahid Kapoor’s Jersey would have been long released had it not been for the pandemic. The film faced multiple delays before its release and one more time in April, to avoid box office clash with Yash’s KGF: Chapter 2. And finally, Jersey will see the light of the day tomorrow, April 22. Co-starring Mrunal Thakur, Jersey is Shahid’s second Hindi remake from South films. The original starred Nani as Arjun. The film was a blockbuster success. Let’s see how the Hindi version of Jersey fares tomorrow.
After a series of flops such as Rangoon and Batti Gul Meter Chalu, Shahid Kapoor, in and as Kabir Singh, was a breath of fresh air. The film marked his first Hindi remake of a South blockbuster, which too became a huge hit. In fact, so much so, that Kabir Singh became one of the highest-grossing films in 2019, with a total worldwide box office collection of Rs 379.02 crore. Soon after, Shahid announced his next Hindi remake, Jersey. And just when we thought it was the return of Shahid, back to back obstacles happened and Jersey release date kept on pushing until tomorrow, finally!
Everyone likes a breakup story. And if that snowballs to a patchup in the end, why not? Kabir Singh was all about that. A hero, who is real, who drinks to drown the memories of his partner who gets married. Which millennial doesn’t? He is so intoxicated both with alcohol and memories of his girlfriend that he accidentally bleeds from his abdomen and has no clue about it. We are not endorsing it but it has some amount of truth involved. Somewhere, the superficial picture painted with the right attitude was probably what made Kabir Singh a ‘super blockbuster’.
