Regency-era romantic drama Bridgerton is returning with Season 2 on March 25. On Throwback Thursday, we give you a quick recap of the first season.
Netflix's popular regency-era drama Bridgerton's second season is arriving on March 25 with the eldest Bridgerton lad, Anthony (Jonathan Bailey), in focus. Based on Julia Quinn's novels, Bridgerton premiered on Netflix on December 25, 2020. The series was a huge hit and went on to garner a record 82 million views in just 28 days.
Later, the record was broken by another massive Netflix hit, Squid Game. The show made it to the Top 10 in every country except Japan, which included India, US, UK, Brazil, France and South Africa. Not just this, but also, the success of Bridgerton pushed the Julia Quinn books onto The New York Times bestseller lists for the first time.
The first season of Bridgerton focused on the love story of the eldest daughter of the Bridgerton family, Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor) and Simon Basset (Rege-Jean Page), the Duke of Hastings. Meanwhile, the second season will revolve around the love triangle between Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey) and sisters Edwina (Charithra Chandran) and Kate Sharma (Simone Ashley).
Before Bridgerton Season 2 premieres on Netflix, here's a quick recap of what all happened in the first season.
The series follows the story of the Bridgerton family, headed by Lady Violet Bridgerton, and her eight children who are named in alphabetical order, as they steer through the English society in regency-era London. In the first episode, Diamond of the First Water, Daphne debuts on London's marriage market. She is termed as the flawless beauty by the Queen. Soon, the newsletter of Lady Whistledown grabs everyone's eyeballs as she praises Daphne and also brings their attention to the Duke of Hastings, who has just returned to ton, and is being eyed by the "mummas" of the prospective brides in London. However, the Duke has his reasons for not getting married.
Daphne and the Duke strike a deal where they pretend to court each other, so that the eager mothers leave Simon alone and the potential suitors find the Bridgerton girl more desirable. But, as we all know, it hardly takes time for pretentious relationships to turn into a passionate affair. Later, when Simon tells Daphne that he can't 'sire a heir,' she concludes that he is infertile. However, the Duke had no plans to ever become a father because of a vow. When Daphne comes to know about this, she feels cheated, causing a rift between the couple.
