BCB on re-appointing Shakib Al Hasan as Test captain: We need to be sure about his availability

The Bangladesh Cricket Board chief is expected to hold a meeting on June 2 to take the captaincy decision after Mominul Haque Showrabh stepped down as the skipper.
Bangladesh Cricket Board chief Nazmul Hasan said the BCB needs to know whether Shakib Al Hasan will play the red-ball game regularly before re-appointing him as the Test captain.
The board has been forced to take a decision on the captaincy role after Mominul Haque Showrabh stepped down as the skipper on May 31. Mominul said that his lack of form made it tougher for him to lead Bangladesh at the highest level.
"Shakib can be a skipper in any format. But we need to know whether he will play or not (Test cricket regularly)," Nazmul told Cricbuzz.
"If he says that he won't go or choose a format then it will be a problem. Shakib was our skipper and there is no doubt about his captaincy. But we also need to be sure about his availability.
"He cannot make last minute decisions about his availability when he is the captain. We have to discuss with him first. We cannot make someone a captain on a whim and so have to take a well thought-out (decision)," Nazmul said.
Although Shakib is the front runner to replace Mominul, he has played the just concluded two-Test match series against Sri Lanka since his unavailability in the Pakistan series.
Mominul took the captaincy from Shakib after the latter was handed a one-year ban by the ICC in 2019 for breaching the ICC Anti-Corruption Code. The BCB chief Nazmul is expected to hold a board meeting on June 2 to take the captaincy decision.
