Bathurst fire forces some residents to vacate homes, apartments

A fire that forced the evacuation of some homes and apartments on Ste. Anne Street in Bathurst, N.B., is under control but remains active, the city said in a Facebook post.
A temporary shelter set up at the City Hall Pavilion Gym closed at 3 a.m. because displaced residents were either allowed to go back to their homes or had made other arrangements, but it reopened Sunday morning.
Mayor Kim Chamberlain said in a video posted to Facebook on Sunday morning that anyone concerned about air quality in their home can access the facility.
"If you're having a difficult time to breathe, please let us know," Chamberlain said. "There's no mandatory evacuation but I think [police] will be going door to door to let people know that the Pavilion is open on St. George Street."
The fire happened at Eddy Group, a business that sells plumbing, HVAC and electrical supplies.
The city is advising people to stay away from Ste. Anne Street.
City spokesperson Luc Foulem said no one was injured in the blaze. He said the cause of the fire is under investigation.
Shreyas Puthran, who works at a gas station located close to the fire location, said the situation has improved compared to Saturday night.
"We can still see the smoke. It's definitely more white and light greyish now," he said around 7 a.m. Sunday.
Puthran said he became aware of the fire Saturday around 9 p.m. when he spotted a "giant, black plume of smoke" when he went out to run errands.
"It was pretty intense," he said. "There was a lot of fire."
Puthran said there are a lot of trees in the area.
William Leet was biking down St. Peter Avenue when he spotted the fire. He stopped to take a video and noticed the wind was spreading the flames off the Eddy Group property.
Leet was also concerned about the fire spreading to the woods, or the nearby K.C. Irving Regional Centre arena.
