Coimbatore City Police place barricades to prevent roadside parking near CMCH, while underutilized parking lot remains a concern.
To address parking issues near Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) on Trichy Road, the Coimbatore City Police have placed barricades along the hospital frontage to prevent two-wheeler riders from parking on the roadside.
A parking lot, constructed by the Coimbatore Corporation behind the Lanka Corner bus stop at a cost of ₹56 lakh, can accommodate up to 280 two-wheelers and 15 cars. However, the space has remained underutilised, as many motorists were reportedly unaware of the facility. Parking charges have also emerged as a concern, particularly for patients and their attendants who visit the hospital.
A traffic police officer said, “We have placed barricades in front of the hospital compound and are diverting vehicles to the parking lot opposite the hospital. However, some two-wheelers are still parked outside the barricades, almost in the middle of the road. Traffic personnel are deployed during the daytime, but during wee hours, when police presence is limited, vehicles are parked haphazardly. We impose a fine of ₹500 in such cases.”
The officer added that a request has been made to the Corporation to consider making the parking facility free for hospital visitors, citing the financial burden on patients, many of whom come from economically weaker backgrounds.
An official from the Coimbatore Corporation said discussions were under way with the hospital management to explore the possibility of offering free parking exclusively for hospital visitors.
