Bappi Lahiri was the Indian music director to be invited by Jonathan Ross for a live performance on BBC London.
Legendary singer and music composer Bappi Lahiri passed away on Tuesday, February 15 at a Mumbai hospital. He was 69 years old. The news of his demise came as a shock to everyone. However, did you know that the legend was the first Indian music composer to perform live on BBC London?
Bappi Lahiri's iconic music added spunk to Hollywood films. He was also the first Indian music composer to be invited by Jonathon Ross of ITV, London for a live performance on BBC London in 1989. In 1986, Bappi Da entered the Guinness Book of World Records for recording over 180 songs for 33 films.
Bappi Lahiri’s style with gold chains was his statement. When asked about international competition in the world of music, he said “There is no competition, but there are singers who dress like me. Among women, there’s Beyonce and there’s Shakira and among men, there is 50 Cent, Eminem and definitely, Akon.”
Bappi Lahiri breathed his last at around 11.45 pm on February 15. He is survived by two children - a son, Bappa Lahiri, and a daughter, Rema Lahiri. Since Bappa is in the US, the family is waiting for his arrival. He will perform Bappi Lahiri's last rites. Bappa is married to Taneesha Lahiri, daughter of action director Mahendra Verma.
