At least one million inhabitants have been marooned due to the flooding. Over three hundred educational institutions have been closed and electricity supplies are shut down.
Osmani International Airport, Sylhet, one of the airports in this region, also suspended its activities. The army has already launched rescue operations here.
Local journalist Akash Choudhry said most of the areas of Companiganj and Gowainghat upazilas under Sylhet district have gone under water already. Jaintapur and Kanaighat upazilas are facing the same situation. With flood water rising in Sylhet sadar area, South Surma, Zakiganj and Biswanath upazila. Most of the areas in Sylhet city have gone under water already.
Executive engineer of Sylhet water development board, Engineer Asif Ahmed, said water from the Surma river is flowing over 1.8 cm above the danger level at Kanaighat point and 25 cm at Sylhet point.
The water of the Saari river is still flowing 23 cm above the danger level and as the water is high of Kushiara and Lova river. Kushiyara river water is flowing 40cm above the danger level at Fenchuganj point.
District relief and rehabilitation officer, Nurul Islam said at least five lakh (half a million) people of Sylhet district have been waterlogged. 443 emergency shelter centers are ready to rescue them and distribution of relief materials is going on among them.
