Indian-born author Salman Rushdie was stabbed multiple times on Friday during an event in New York. Rushdie suffered a stab wound to his neck and was airlifted to a hospital, police officials said.
A video footage of the incident showed people rushing to Salman Rushdie’s aid after he was attacked at the event in Chautauqua Institution in Chautauqua.
1) A man ran up onto stage and attacked Salman Rushdie at an event in western New York state on Friday morning.
“A male suspect ran up onto stage at a speaking event and attacked Salman Rushdie and an interviewer at 11 am (local time), today in Chautauqua Institution in Chautauqua. Rushdie suffered an apparent stab wound to his neck & was transported by helicopter to a hospital,” New York State Police said after the attack.
2) As per a report by the Associated Press, a man confronted Rushdie on stage at the Chautauqua Institution and began punching or stabbing him 10 to 15 times as he was being introduced. The 75-year-old author was pushed or fell to the floor.
3) The attacker was arrested by the police. The motive behind the attack is not yet known.
4) Rushdie was taken by helicopter to a hospital, state police said. His condition was not immediately known. Kathy Hochul, Governor of New York State, said, “He is alive and has been transported, airlifted, to safety... The event moderator was attacked as well; he's getting the care he needs at a local hospital.”
