Australian cricket legend Allan Border has called for overturning David Warner's captaincy ban, saying that the opener had paid his dues and it is time to move on from the incident.
Australian cricket legend Allan Border has called for David Warner's leadership ban to be lifted saying that it is time to move on from the matter.
Warner was a central figure in the sandpaper-gate scandal that rocked Australian cricket back in 2018. The southpaw was given a lifetime ban from leadership roles, while Steve Smith was given a clean chit after two years.
Many have backed Warner and has asked for him to return to captaincy, with Border being the latest one to defend the opener.
Speaking to Fox Sports, the former Australian captain said that Warner has paid his dues and even suggested that ball-tampering is something that has prevalent in the game for a long time.
“It was a harsh penalty in the first place let’s get on with it; they’ve served their time. I know that every other side’s doing exactly what we were caught doing. (If) all the captains put their hand on their heart and say ‘I wasn’t doing anything similar’, they’d be telling ‘porky pies’ (lies)."
“The bans those boys copped were a bit over the top for the crime, given the knowledge around the cricket fraternity where this has been going on."
“They all had to change the way they went about their cricket,” said Border.
