Ather 450X Gen 3 review, first ride
India Today
Ather has just launched the third generation version of the Ather 450X. The scooter promises a lot more features, range, and performance. The Ather 450X Gen 3 then is poised to take on the likes of the Ola S1 Pro, Bajaj Chetak, TVS iQube ST, and also the forthcoming Simple One electric scooter. Here is what to expect from the new Ather 450X Gen 3.
There is little to doubt that the Ather 450X is one of the most popular electric scooters in the country. The fact that it performed flawlessly, provided the promised range, all features worked, and also the availability of the Ather Grid charging backup made sure that people took to the Ather without any worries. But there were still some bits that needed attention or may we say an update. Ather has done just that with the Gen 3 version. So let’s dig into the Ather 450X Gen 3.
Ather 450X Gen 3: Design, features, accessories, colours
At first glance one will be hard-pressed to spot the differences. However, look closely, and you will be able to see that the Gen 3 comes with new and fatter tyres. These tyres have been developed in conjunction with MRF and Ather claims that they offer 25 per cent more grip and 16 per cent higher contact patch. Next up are the mirrors. Ather says that customers have been wanting better mirrors and hence in comes new mirrors which offer two times better visibility and overall help reduce handlebar weight by 20 per cent. The other addition is the inclusion of a rear foot stand which is cleverly designed and not an eyesore. It also offers a decent amount of foot space thereby adding to the comfort. The Ather 450X Gen 3 also packs in better tech. The display has been revised, and the processors benefit from 2GB of RAM. This makes the system faster. Needless to say, the display continues to operate flawlessly and is clear to read too.
Moving on to the accessory list, the Ather 450X Gen 3 comes with a front organizer which is screwed onto the leg shield. The unit offers recesses for various items like phones and bottles and also offers more space for other knick-knacks. Quite handy and well-built as well. Customers can also additionally purchase a tail bad which again is removable and offers generous cargo space. This aside the Ather 450X Gen 3 remains identical to the Gen 2 which it replaces. We all expected that Ather would consider offering the Gen 3 with a choice of new colours. However, the Ather 450X Gen 3 continues with the same three colour options as before. This includes Mint Green, Space Gray, and White.
Ather 450X Gen 3: Riding position, seat, boot space
We expected the Gen 3 to get updated as far as riding ergos go. But that has not been the case. The seating triangle still feels a bit cramped for longer rides. The seat offers a prominent ridge dividing the rider and pillion spaces and this hinders movement space for the rider when riding solo. On the upside the flat floor aids carrying of luggage with ease. The boot space too remains unchanged and can hold 22 litres of cargo. But most of the space is occupied by the charger which comes with the scooter.
