India urged greater urgency in the global effort to prevent terrorists from acquiring weapons of mass destruction at a United Nations Security Council meeting.
At a United Nations Security Council meet, India pushed for urgency in the global effort to prevent terrorists from acquiring weapons of mass destruction.
“Procrastination cannot be an option anymore,” said India’s A Amarnath, Counsellor at the United Nations Security Council.
Following a briefing by the chair of the UNSC 1540 committee, he said, “Positive progress has been achieved. However, more urgency is required to ensure the mandate [of 1540 committee] is fulfilled within the prescribed period. Early adoption of 2022 programme with a clear timeline of activities will contribute immensely. India will continue to engage constructively towards this end.”

The 1540 committee was set up to ensure implementation of the UNSC resolution 1540, which pertains to non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.
