Assets worth over Rs 1 crore of two Gujarat men who allegedly sold fake Remdesivir - an anti-viral drug used in the treatment of Covid-19 - to patients during the second wave of the pandemic have been attached by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), officials said. The attached assets include cash and money in bank accounts under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
Gujarat residents Kaushal Mahendra Bhai Vora and Punit Gunvantlal Shah were accused of manufacturing and selling fake injections of Remdesivir - a drug in high demand during the second wave and in short supply - across Madhya Pradesh and other states at exorbitant prices amid an unprecedented crisis.
During the investigation, it was found that the supply chain of these injections originated from a manufacturing facility in Surat. The police filed an FIR over the sale of fake Remdesivir injections from this manufacturing facility.
“The injections were also sold to various vendors, retail customers, and hospitals in Madhya Pradesh. The Indore Police had lodged an FIR against certain people attempting to sell fake Remdesivir injections in the city,” officials added.

According to the ED, the accused sold the medicine in vials that appeared similar to original vials sold by a reputed brand.
“The fake injections were being manufactured by mixing glucose and salt in deceptively similar bottles with similar stickers as on the branded and original injections. Empty bottles of the same size and similar appearance, huge quantities of glucose and salt, huge packing material, fake stickers, and other raw materials in huge quantities were seized during raids at the farmhouse that doubled as a manufacturing facility in Surat by the police in Gujarat,” the ED said in a statement.
