Forest officials with the help of locals rescued six wild elephants who got trapped in a muddy pond in Assam’s Goalpara district on Friday evening.
Locals said a herd of wild elephants came down to the area from nearby hills of Meghalayain search of food. While foraging, six tuskers, including a calf, got stuck in a muddy pond near Lakhipur area of Goalpara.
Some villagers noticed the plight of the stuck elephants and immediately informed local forest officials and police.
A forest official of Goalpara district said JCBs had to be used to extricate the jumbos from the muck. The entire operation to rescue the wild elephants took almost two hours.
“After we received information that six elephants got stuck in a pond, our team immediately reached the spot. At least 10 wild elephants had gone down to the pond to take bath and out of them four elephants had managed to come out, but six elephants got trapped. Later, we used two JCBs to rescue the six elephants,” he added.
