Two policemen, including an officer-in charge and a constable of Kampur police station in Assam’s Nagaon district, were swept away by flood waters late on Sunday night. The policemen were engaged in a flood rescue operation when the incident took place.
The bodies of both the policemen have been retrieved by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) after overnight search operations.
The incident took place when a team of police from the Kampur police station, led by officer in-charge Samutjal Kakati, were engaged in a flood rescue operation in Kampur. The officer-in-charge has been identified as Samujjal Kakoty and the constable has been identified as Rajib Bordoloi.
Constable Bordoloi was washed away by the strong current of the flood waters while carrying out the rescue operation. The officer in-charge, Kakoty, immediately jumped into the water to save the constable from being swept away but they were swept away due to currents.
The SDRF launched a massive rescue and search operation and the bodies of the duo were recovered on Monday morning.
Nagaon superintendent of police Leena Doley said, “During a flood rescue operation last night, a team of Assam police fell in a water body in the Kampur area of Nagaon. To save his colleague, officer in-charge sub inspector Samutjal Kakati jumped into the water. The mortal remains of OC SI Samutjal Kakati and UB constable Rajiv Bordoloi have now been recovered.
