
Assam flood situation improves; affected population declines to 11 lakh

The flood situation in Assam continued to improve on Tuesday although four more people, including two children, lost their lives in the deluge.
The flood situation in Assam improved on Tuesday with the number of people affected by the deluge coming down to 11 lakhs and four new fatalities, including two children, recorded in the past 24 hours.
Nearly 11.17 lakh people are suffering from the deluge across 20 districts of the state, which includes Bajali, Barpeta, Biswanath, Cachar, Chirang, Darrang, Dibrugarh, Dima Hasao, Goalpara, Golaghat, Hailakandi, Kamrup, Kamrup Metropolitan, Karimganj, Lakhimpur, Morigaon, Nagaon, Sivasagar, Sonitpur and Tamulpur, the daily flood report of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) stated.
Cachar is the worst-hit district with over 6.31 lakh people affected, followed by Nagaon (2,32,863) and Morigaon (1,64,912), the flood report stated.
The total number of persons losing their lives in both the waves of flood since April 6 this year now stands at 184, the report added.
At present, 1,024 villages are under water and over 29,781 hectares of crop areas have been damaged across Assam, the ASDMA report stated.Authorities are running 383 relief camps and distribution centres in 15 districts, where a total of 1,48,122 people, including 44,190 children, have taken shelter.
Massive erosion has been witnessed in Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Chirang, Dhemaji, Hailakandi, Lakhimpur, Morigaon, Tinsukia and Udalguri districts, the report stated.
Houses, roads, bridges and other infrastructure have been damaged by the deluge in Bajali, Biswanath, Chirang, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Hojai, Kamrup, Karimganj, Morigaon, Sivasagar and Udalguri districts, it added.
