Assam flood fury: Death toll crosses 80; heavy rainfall alert issued for Guwahati

Assam witnessed more devastation as the floods claimed 10 more lives, including two policemen, in the last 24 hours, following which the death toll crossed 80 on Tuesday.
Amid the worsening flood and landslide situation in Assam, the death toll crossed 80 on Tuesday while 34 districts continued to reel under their impact, affecting 47,72,140 people in the last 24 hours.
The floods claimed 10 more lives, including two policemen, while 2,31,819 were sheltered in relief camps during the last 24 hrs in the state, according to the State Disaster Management Authority.
A police officer and a constable were swept away by the raging currents of the Kopili River while they were trying to rescue marooned people stuck in floods.

The water in five rivers - Brahmaputra, Kopili, Beki, Pagladiya, Puthimari - is flowing above the danger level at several places.
Four units of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), a total of 105 personnel, with modern life-saving equipment, were dispatched on Tuesday to carry out rescue operations in the Barak Valley.
